Holdem Rules

The game of Texas Holdem (or Holdem for short) is a game of poker. Each player at the table (between 2 and 10 players) is dealt 2 cards face down. They then have a look at their own cards and make bets accordingly. The player to the left of the dealer has to post a small compulsary bet (called the Small Blind). The player next (going clockwise) has to post another smallish compulsary bet (called the Big Blind (twice the size of the small blind). Then the next player has to make the first betting decision.

He can do one of the following:

Check or Bet
(Checking is basically saying you dont want to bet)

The action continues to the left, but once someone has bet then more decisions are presented to the following players. Those action decisions are:

Fold
Call
Raise

When the betting action is complete, 3 cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. This is called The Flop. A betting round starting from the person in the small blind now takes place. Basically you have the exact same pattern of action choice as described above.

When that betting round is complete, another card is dealt face up in the middle of the table. There will now be 4 cards in the middle of the table (all face up). This 4th card is called The Turn.

A 3rd betting round now takes place, starting from the person in the small blind once again. Again you have the same action choices

When that betting round is complete, another card is dealt face up in the middle of the table. There will now be 5 cards in the middle of the table (all face up). This 5th card is called The River.

A 4th and final betting round now takes place, starting from the person in the small blind once again. Again you have the same action choices

And that is it for betting. Now whoever has the best hand wins. You can use any 5 cards from the 5 in the middle of the table, and the 2 in your hand. IE play your best 5 cards from 7. Again, you dont need to worry when playing holdem online, as the software will make sure you dont make any mistakes.

Remember at all times, once a player has folded they are permanently out of the hand, and do not take part in any further action decisions. Again, when playing holdem online this will be obvious, as you will just be watching the rest of the hand without any decisions being presented to you on the screen.
